Background of the Study
Farmers in Ikom Local Government Area, Cross River State, face unprecedented challenges due to climate change, which has altered rainfall patterns, increased temperature variability, and led to more frequent extreme weather events. In response, diverse adaptation strategies have been developed, ranging from changes in cropping patterns to the adoption of climate-resilient farming techniques (Eme, 2023). These strategies include the use of drought-tolerant crop varieties, improved water conservation methods, and agroforestry practices that aim to mitigate the adverse effects of climate variability (Nwosu, 2024). However, the effectiveness of these adaptation measures remains variable, influenced by factors such as access to information, financial resources, and extension services. Recent research emphasizes that successful climate change adaptation not only enhances agricultural productivity but also improves food security and rural livelihoods (Ikechukwu, 2025). This study investigates the adaptation strategies employed by farmers in Ikom, assessing their effectiveness in reducing climate-related risks and proposing policy measures to support more resilient agricultural practices.
Statement of the Problem
Farmers in Ikom face significant challenges from climate change, including unpredictable rainfall and extreme weather events, which adversely affect crop yields and livelihoods. Despite adopting various adaptation strategies, many farmers continue to experience low productivity and heightened vulnerability (Onye, 2024). Limited access to modern farming technologies and extension services further hinders effective adaptation. This study seeks to investigate the effectiveness of current climate change adaptation strategies among farmers in Ikom and to identify barriers that reduce their efficacy, aiming to provide recommendations for more sustainable agricultural practices.
Objectives of the Study:
• To evaluate the effectiveness of existing climate change adaptation strategies among farmers.
• To identify barriers that hinder successful adaptation in agricultural practices.
• To recommend policy interventions for enhancing climate resilience in farming communities.
Research Questions:
• What adaptation strategies are currently employed by farmers in Ikom?
• How effective are these strategies in mitigating climate change impacts?
• What policy measures can improve the adoption and effectiveness of adaptation techniques?
Research Hypotheses:
• H1: Climate change adaptation strategies significantly improve crop resilience.
• H2: Barriers such as limited access to technology reduce the effectiveness of adaptation measures.
• H3: Policy interventions enhance the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices.
Significance of the Study
This study is vital for understanding how farmers in Ikom adapt to climate change and for identifying areas where support is most needed. Its findings will inform policymakers and development agencies on effective strategies to bolster agricultural resilience and food security (Uko, 2023; Eze, 2025). The recommendations aim to enhance the sustainability of farming practices and improve rural livelihoods.
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to evaluating climate change adaptation strategies among farmers in Ikom Local Government Area, Cross River State. It focuses exclusively on agricultural practices and climate resilience, excluding broader socio-economic factors. Data are collected solely from local farming communities and agricultural extension services.
Definitions of Terms:
• Climate Change Adaptation: Adjustments in practices and systems to mitigate the adverse impacts of climate variability.
• Resilient Agriculture: Farming practices designed to withstand climate-induced stresses.
• Food Security: The state in which all people have regular access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food.
